LGBT Trauma and Domestic Violence: What Clinicians Need to Know

This six-hour training will be an introductory level exploration of trauma and domestic violence in the LGBT community. After a review of terms of relevance to LGBT clients, the presenter will give an overview of issues faced by members of this population, including experiences of trauma and domestic violence.. Participants will learn skills to screen, assess and refer clients who are facing domestic violence and/or intimate partner violence (IPV). Case examples will be used to explore the application of skills. 



John O'Brien

John O’Brien, PhD received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University.  He is currently in full time private practice in Portland, specializing in substance abuse, grief, trauma and gay/lesbian issues. In his previous professional life, he was a high school guidance counselor and worked at Spring Harbor Counseling in their Partial Hospital/Outpatient Services. In addition, he teaches courses at the University of Maine at Augusta in psychology and addictions. He is a Past President of the Maine Psychological Association. John is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant.
