Course Description

March 25, 2021

This workshop will address the use of syringe exchange programs (SEPs) as an effective, evidence-based, harm reduction approach to serving people who use drugs. We will explore the history of SEPs—globally, nationally, and within the state—and consider their efficacy in reducing the spread of infectious diseases, connecting with vulnerable populations, and educating around safer drug use methods. We will explore the importance of SEPs as safe, judgment-free spaces that provide critical peripheral public health services to underserved individuals.

March 26, 2021

This workshop will examine how the delivery of harm reduction services has changed during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We will explore the ways in which policies, programs, and practices have been adapted to serve clients in a manner that is safer, requires less direct contact, and accommodates the particular needs of people who use drugs. Special effort will be made to explain which changes are state mandated, which specific practice accommodations have been implemented by individual agencies, and what we have learned about the delivery of harm reduction services during this difficult period.
