This course explores the assumptions and principles of a trauma-informed approach in organizations that provide behavioral health and co-occurring services to individuals and families. It also examines the need for the entire organization (including administrators, support staff, clinicians and clinical supervisors) to incorporate a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma on the consumers of mental health and addiction services, the role that trauma plays in the development of mental health and substance use issues, and the complexity and diversity of ways people recover and heal from trauma. Emphasis is placed on workforce development, screening and assessment, general treatment considerations, evidence-informed/evidence-based trauma specific interventions and cultural competencies.

How it Works

This course is a self-guided online training with a combination of readings, videos, and discussion/reflection questions. A .pdf certificate will be issued upon completion of all course material and a course evaluation.

For multiple staff members of an organization who are taking this course at the same time, we recommend forming your own discussion group and meeting weekly for 4 weeks to review the discussion/reflection exercises and questions at the end of each lesson.
