CCSME and the Maine Medical Center PIER program are re-offering a two-session CBTp practitioner training series. Included with the series is an opportunity to apply for an ongoing CBTp-informed monthly referral and supervision group.

2022.04.29 and 2022.05.06 | 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. | CBT-p Practitioner Training Series 

Prerequisite Course – Introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy*

Participants who attend this series will participate in an in-depth exploration of all aspects of CBTp, focused on early assessment and treatment in Part One, and ongoing treatment in Part Two.  The series will be a mix of didactic information, discussion, interactive breakout room activities and role-plays to enhance learning and engage participants in the interactive virtual format. Participants who complete the series will have the option to apply to be part of a free CBTp-informed referral network and monthly supervision group, hosted by the PIER Program.

Part 1

Participants will learn skills to apply the CBTp principles reviewed in the introductory workshop.  This includes operationalizing the initial stages of CBTp treatment with specialized engagement strategies, Socratic questioning, formulation-based “making sense” interventions and targeted clinical strategies for psychosis. The course will be a mix of didactic information, trainer demonstration, discussion and interactive activities to enhance participant learning.

Course Agenda—Part One:

  1. Review of Core Concepts from Introduction to CBTp
  2. CBTp Session Structure
  3. Engagement and Socratic Questioning—review and practice
  4. Psychosis-Specific Assessment tools—review and practice
  5. Introduction to CBTp Formulation & ‘Making Sense’ framework—review and practice

What You Will Learn:

  • To build on prior learning of the structure of cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis;
  • To enhance skills and practice strategies of engagement, Socratic questioning in early stages of treatment
  • To enhance skills and practice targeted interventions for psychosis.

Part 2 

Participants will learn skills to promote cognitive flexibility, will be introduced to psychosis-specific behavioral interventions, and learn a 5-step process of Cognitive Restructuring, a key concept in CBTp practice.  Participants will learn these techniques through trainer demonstration and role play practice at multiple stages in treatment.  Training participants will increase their awareness of what treatment looks like over time, as clients progress toward treatment goals. Finally, participants will be introduced to the CBTp-informed Referral and Monthly Supervision Group starting in Summer, 2021.  The course will be a mix of didactic information, trainer demonstration, discussion and interactive activities to enhance participant learning.

  1. Review engagement, assessment/formulation, making sense and targeted interventions
  2. Build strategies to enhance cognitive flexibility: identifying thinking styles and introducing alternative beliefs
  3. Learn the 5 steps of Cognitive Restructuring—trainer demonstration and practice
  4. Learn Psychosis-Specific Behavioral Strategies
  5. Enhance skills and practice at different stages of treatment
  6. Discuss next steps—CBTp supervision over time; Monthly Supervision and Referral Group

  • To build an understanding of how treatment changes over time through roleplay practice at multiple stages of treatment
