Description:
This session will cover harm reduction principles and preventive care (including pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV and wound care education) for people who use drugs. It will also review community-based drug checking programs and provide updates on a drug checking program that will be operating soon in Maine.
Objectives:
1) Briefly review harm reduction principles
2) Review harm reduction-based preventative care for people who use drugs, including pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV and wound care education
3) Understand drug checking programs for people who use drugs
Presenters:
Kinna Thakarar, DO | Dr. Kinna Thakarar is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine in Portland, Maine. She is board-certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and addiction medicine and has a special interest in health services research related to the ID/ substance use disorder syndemic. She completed ID fellowship and additional addiction medicine training at Boston Medical Center. She provides infectious disease and addiction medicine care at a variety of sites, including, MMC, MMP ID, Preble Street Learning Collaborative, and also precepts trainees at the Gilman (HIV/hepatitis) clinic in Portland.
Hannah R. Kazal, MD, ScM, AAHIVS| Dr. Kazal is currently an Addiction Medicine Fellow at Maine Medical Center and works in both the Maine Health and Togus VA systems. In medical school, residency, and as a fellow, Dr. Kazal has learned from, cared and advocated for patients experiencing inequitable legal and medical practices, such as those living with SUD’s, psychiatric disorders, HIV/AIDS, and carceral histories. By partnering with interdisciplinary community and medical networks, physicians can help combat stigma that is life-threatening for our patients.
