Behavioral health practitioners are using digital and other technology in unprecedented ways to serve and communicate with clients. This training will explore cutting-edge ethical issues arising out of practitioners’ and clients’ growing use of digital technology, electronic interventions and communications, and social media. Dr. Frederic Reamer will examine complex ethical issues related to practitioners’ and clients’ use of social networking sites, artificial intelligence, e-therapy, chat rooms, moderated forums, Web-based psychoeducation, self-guided Web-based intervention, video conferencing, telephone therapy, avatar therapy, expert systems, search engines, email exchanges, text messages, and client blogs. The training will focus on key ethical challenges related to privacy, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, boundaries, nontraditional interventions, and documentation, among others. Dr. Reamer will discuss key ethical, regulatory, and practice standards related to practitioners’ use of technology. He will make extensive use of case material and present risk management protocols to protect clients and practitioners.

Presenter:

Frederic G. Reamer, PhD, has been on the faculty of the graduate program, School of Social Work, Rhode Island College since 1983. His teaching and research focus on professional ethics, criminal justice, mental health, health care, and public policy. Dr. Reamer chaired the task force that wrote the NASW Code of Ethics and has served on the code revision committee. He is the author of many books and other publications on professional ethics. His recent books include Risk Management in the Behavioral Health Professions: A Practical Guide to Preventing Malpractice and Licensing-Board Complaints (Columbia University Press) and Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships in the Human Services (Columbia University Press). Dr. Reamer has lectured nationally and internationally on social work and professional ethics, including in India, China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and in various European nations. He has served as an expert witness in many court and licensing board cases throughout the United States.
