This webinar will provide an overview of the systematic study of health stigma. Webinar content will include topics such as attitudes, norms, and biases; stereotypes and stigmatization; and social identity threat. The research related to stigma and substance use disorder and co-morbid conditions will be discussed to exemplify these themes. We will also discuss opportunities and strategies to incorporate for stigma-reduction interventions into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Developing an understanding of key concepts and theories related to the science of stigma a psychological perspective.
    2. Understanding specific examples of research projects that apply psychological theory on stigma to understanding health disparities and care access challenges faced by people with socially devalued health conditions such as substance use disorders.

Presenters:

Dr. Scharnetzki is a Faculty Scientist at CIPHR. She completed her PhD in Experimental Social Psychology at the University of Vermont. Broadly, Dr. Scharnetzki is interested in the psychological, physiological, and behavioral effects of social devaluation mechanisms such as stereotyping, stigmatization and social identity threat. Specifically, her research focuses on understanding how these mechanisms impact the uptake of health-promoting behaviors among patients with stigmatized identities and/or conditions and how these processes may ultimately contribute to health disparities.
