What is addiction? This question has no one answer, but many. Clinicians and researchers spend entire careers trying to figure it out, not to mention the self-reflection by people with addictions that can take a lifetime. This training will explore various models of addiction, including their advantages and limitations, empowering clinicians to draw from models most aligned with clients’ interests. It will also evaluate the dominant models of addiction in current policy for their impact on treatment quality and efficacy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify five models of addiction, including how each model defines and approaches addiction.
  2. Identify common settings in which each model is used, including how different models may be combined.
  3. Understand the advantages and limitations of different models.

How it Works

This course includes a two-part video presentation by Rosalie Genova, LCPC, CCS; followed by a quiz requiring a passing grade of 80% or higher. After completing the video lesson and quiz, you will be directed to a course evaluation. Once you have completed the evaluation, you will be able to download a .pdf certificate to get your course credit.

About the Presenter

Rosalie Genova, LCPC, CCS | Rosalie Genova is private practitioner in Portland. She specializes in clients who work in public service fields such as education, health care, social services, and the military. Before opening her practice, she worked in recovery residences, intensive outpatient, and partial hospital settings. Rosalie also holds a PhD in US History, and is interested in the social and cultural context of mental health distress and treatment.


Criteria for Successful Completion

100% Attendees required to participate and be present in the full duration of the learning activity and complete/submit an evaluation form. Partial credit will not be awarded.
