For many people, spirituality and religion are important aspects of their inner or outer lives. Ethics is the systematic application of principles that help us make decisions about “right” or “wrong” action. This course explores what spirituality and religion are, how spirituality and religion can intersect with counseling, and provides a framework for ethical decision-making related to spirituality and religion in mental health and substance use counseling, drawing on relevant professional guidelines and codes of ethics.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will

• Become familiar with standards of practice regarding this topic
• Become familiar with considerations that underlay ethical decision-making regarding spirituality and religion
• Increase level of competence and self-efficacy regarding ethical practice in this area as applied to mental health and substance use counseling

How it Works

This course includes two video presentations by Dr. John Yasenchek, each followed by a brief quiz requiring a grade of 80% or higher. After completing the video lessons and quizzes, you will be directed to a course evaluation. Once you have completed the evaluation, you will be able to download a .pdf certificate to get your course credit.

John Yasenchak, Ed.D, LCPC, LADC, John Yasenchak is currently a contributing faculty in the School of Counseling, Walden University. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor for Graduate Counseling, Husson University.
