When prescribing opioids, it is essential to balance the potential therapeutic benefit with the known and potential serious risks associated with these drugs. The Food and Drug Administration now requires a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) from manufacturers to ensure that the benefits of a drug or biological product outweigh its risks.

This course reviews strategies such as risk assessment tools and protocols that support patient/client safety and mitigate risk. Tools such as the ORT, PMP, and protocols and procedures such as pill counts, UDS, controlled substance treatment agreements, aberrant behavior screens, SBIRT, and Naloxone prescriptions, among other issues, will be explored as they are used in practice.
