Designed for professionals and group leaders, it emphasizes the effectiveness of MI techniques in breaking isolation, fostering personal growth, and addressing the unique needs of various populations. By understanding the principles of MI within group settings, participants will gain insights into creating supportive environments that inspire change and resilience.
The workshop delves into group dynamics, highlighting the critical roles of leaders and participants. It underscores the importance of empathetic leadership, active engagement, and clearly defined boundaries to ensure a safe and effective space for mutual support. Participants will explore the distinct characteristics of mutual aid support groups and their alignment with MI’s spirit and principles, focusing on empathetic understanding and collaborative change.

• Spirit, Structure, and Skills of MI: The role of MI in group settings and its ability to promote change talk, reduce isolation, and counter learned helplessness.
• Benefits of Group Work: How mutual aid groups create a supportive environment that fosters connection and emotional well-being.
• Special Populations: Tailoring group approaches for adolescents, young adults, and individuals facing addiction or gender-specific challenges.

• Frequency & Duration: Best practices for structuring effective group sessions.
Participants will leave equipped to lead impactful groups that promote healing, connection, and growth.

Presenter:
Stephen R. Andrew LCSW, LADC, CCS is a storyteller, trainer, therapist and author. He maintains a compassion-focused practice in Portland, Maine and facilitates a variety of mutual aid support groups. A member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2003, he became a Certified MINT Trainer in 2019. He is the co-founder of Agape, Inc. which supports the Men’s Resource Center of Southern Maine, Dignity for People Using Opiates, and InnerEdge Counseling. He has been a MIA-STEP trainer (Motivational Interviewing Assessment; Supervisor Training Program) for the New England ATTC since 2007. Stephen has also been MITI-trained (Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity) and has over 100 hours of training in Motivational Interviewing. Stephen provides coaching and training domestically and internationally as well as supervising a coding/coaching laboratory and simulation training lab for Motivational Interviewing.
