PMP Series | Clonidine in Maine’s Carceral Setting: Pharmacology, Prescribing Practices, and Safety Considerations
This webinar will provide clinicians with a review of clonidine, including its pharmacological properties, mechanism of action, and key prescribing considerations across a range of clinical indications. Special attention will be given to the use of clonidine in patients with substance use disorder, including its role in managing withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid and alcohol use disorders and important safety considerations for this patient population. Use of clonidine for patients with justice-system involvement as well as in the community will be discussed.
Objectives:
- Describe pharmacological properties of clonidine as an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist
- Discuss evidence-based prescribing practices for clonidine across approved and off-label indications
- Discuss the role of clonidine in the management of patients with substance use disorder (SUD)
