We will explore epidemiology, common etiologies, and treatment considerations when caring for patients with bipolar disorder and various substance use disorders (SUDs). First, we will examine the prevalence of bipolar disorder in people with SUDs and the prevalence of SUDs in people with bipolar disorder. Next, we will identify possible common etiologies between SUDs and bipolar disorder including genetic, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. Finally, we will examine how SUDs can impact the treatment of bipolar disorder and how bipolar disorder can impact the treatment of SUDs.

About the Presenter
Stephanie Nichols, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, BCPP, FCCP is an Associate Professor in the University of New England College of Pharmacy, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Tufts University School of Medicine, and a Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Pharmacist at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She graduated from the University at Buffalo with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree and completed an Inpatient Pharmacy Practice Residency at Maine Medical Center. Dr. Nichols is dual board certified as a Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and a Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) and is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP).
