Description:
This session will focus on HIV and substance use disorders (SUD). We will review issues that affect people with HIV (PWH), including stigma and other common comorbidities that affect morbidity and mortality in the context of SUD and HIV. Particularly in the setting of the setting of the recent cluster of HIV cases in Maine, we will also explore evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the impact of stigma on people with HIV (PWH)
- Review global & local epidemiology of substance use disorders (SUD), HIV, and related services for people who use drugs (PWUD)
- Understand morbidity and mortality associated with SUDs, HIV, and other co-morbidities
- Explore prevention and treatment services for patients with SUDs and HIV
Presenters:
Kinna Thakarar, DO, MPH
Dr. Kinna Thakarar is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine in Portland, Maine. She is board-certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and addiction medicine and has a special interest in health services research related to the ID/ substance use disorder syndemic. She completed ID fellowship and additional addiction medicine training at Boston Medical Center. She provides infectious disease and addiction medicine care at a variety of sites, including, MMC, MMP ID, Preble Street Learning Collaborative, and also precepts trainees at the Gilman (HIV/hepatitis) clinic in Portland.
