The landscape of illicit substances is continuously evolving, with the emergence of novel psychoactive substances posing increasing challenges to healthcare professionals. Among these, the 2-C series of drugs, which are known for their combined hallucinogenic and stimulant properties, have garnered increase attention and concern. This presentation aims to educate on the pharmacology and risks associated with 2-C drugs, details the recognition of intoxication with these substances, outlines initial management strategies, and explore current trends in novel substances within the New England Region. The goal is to enhance the ability of healthcare professionals to identify, understand, and respond effectively to individuals who may be using these emerging substances.

Presenters:
Michael Yu is a certified specialist in poison information with the Northern New England Poison Center. He is a Doctor of Pharmacy with a second major in microbiology, currently working towards his clinical certification in toxicology. In his free time, he enjoys winter hikes and climbing.
Karen Simone, PharmD. Dr. Karen Simone is the Director of the Northern New England Poison Center, which serves the States of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. She is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. She received her Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati in 1994, became a Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology in 1998 and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology in 2011. She has served on the MaineHealth board associated behavioral health, and the associated quality committee, since 2013. She is the current Maine Behavioral Healthcare Board Chair.
