Benzodiazepines and opioids are often co-prescribed which can lead to negative patient outcomes. Despite the CDCs recommendation to avoid this combination, it still remains prevalent with an increasing associated morbidity and mortality. This webinar will discuss the prevalence and complications of co-prescribing benzodiazepines and opioids as well as offer mitigation and deprescribing methods to assist in reduction of complications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the prevalence of opioid and benzodiazepine co-prescription
  2. Present evidence of the harmful outcomes of co-prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines
  3. Discuss mitigation strategies that may be helpful in avoiding co-prescription of opioids and benzodiazepines
  4. Offer de-prescribing techniques for both opioids and benzodiazepines

Presenters:

Nicolette Centanni, Pharm D, BCPS, BCGP, BCPP is a clinical pharmacist at Maine Medical Center who specializes in internal medicine and psychiatry. She works closely with the addiction medicine team to deliver the most effective and up to date care for people with substance use disorders. Some of this work includes education on treating pain in people with opioid use disorder and creating a robust order set for the inpatient initiation of buprenorphine. She lives in Portland, Maine with her partner, 2 kids, 3 dogs and 2 cats!
