Description

May 6, 2025 | 12:00-1:00 PM Care for Alcohol Use Disorder: Using the Right Tools for the Job

Description:

Alcohol is second only to tobacco use as a cause of substance-related mortality in the United States. Unlike tobacco, alcohol morbidity and mortality are increasing without signs of slowing. It has taken centuries for us to recognize the need for medical care of alcohol use disorder (AUD), and too few people receive what could be life-changing and life-saving care. We will discuss treatments that are especially effective. At the same time, medical care for AUD has important limitations we need to understand or otherwise risk using the wrong tool for the job.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Describe the current epidemiology of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)
    2. Describe the evidence regarding approaches to AUD in primary care
    3. Describe the limitations of a medical model for treating AUD
