Addiction to both prescription and illicit opioid drugs has become a public health crisis in the United States and Maine. Maine health care practitioners need to be aware of the high level of concern among elected and other health policymakers about this crisis and the public policy reaction to it. The Maine legislation enacted an update to the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) imposing limits on prescription opioid medication; mandating the use of the PMP; and requiring specific continuing medical education (CME) for practitioners who prescribe opioid medications in 2015. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control published new Guidelines on the Treatment of Chronic Pain in 2016. Both of these documents will be reviewed and cases presented to reinforce the goals and recommendation for limiting the opioid crisis. The current state of the opiate crisis in Maine and the United states will be examined with regard to any changes that have occurred in the crises since implementation of the new Maine PMP and the CDC Chronic Pain Guidelines. Lastly, there will be a review of new strategies for treating acute dental pain with an investigational opiate and non-opiate analgesics.
