The Stages of Change model is widely used to assess clients’ status (in clinical evaluations) and to describe the process of personal change (in psychoeducation). This training is equally appropriate for practitioners who are new to the model and for those who learned it many years ago, exploring the research origins of the Stages of Change and their many clinical applications. The training also discusses practical ways to use the Stages of Change with clients, particularly those with substance use difficulties, including limitations to this model.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the Stages of Change and understand the origins and applications of this transtheoretical model
  2. Recognize how clinical presentations reflect the various stages, including signs of potential relapse or reflecting on relapse
  3. Learn how to customize clinical interventions according to a person’s assessed stage of change, including how to avoid common pitfalls
  4. Understand limitations to using the Stages of Change in clinical work

How it Works

This course includes a three-part video presentation by Rosalie Genova, LCPC, CCS; followed by a quiz requiring a passing grade of 80% or higher. After completing the video lesson and quiz, you will be directed to a course evaluation. Once you have completed the evaluation, you will be able to download a .pdf certificate to get your course credit.

About the Presenter: Rosalie Genova, LCPC, CCS, is a solo practitioner in Portland. She has worked in university campus substance use and recovery residence settings, as well as in outpatient, intensive outpatient, and partial hospital programs. Rosalie specializes in substance use issues and in working with clients in public service fields. Rosalie also holds a PhD in US History, and is interested in the social and cultural context of mental health distress and treatment. Criteria for Successful Completion

100% Attendees required to participate and be present in the full duration of the learning activity and complete/submit an evaluation form. Partial credit will not be awarded.
