Description:
This program will review current legal requirements for Maine opioid prescribers and the possible effects of current law enforcement activity
Objectives:
Improve understanding and familiarity with documentation and other tools to manage legal risk in view of current law enforcement activity involving opioid prescribing practices.
Learn the basic requirements associated with Maine’s opioid prescribing statute and rules.
Learn the basic legal and regulatory requirements associated with Maine’s Prescription Monitoring Program.

About the Presenters
Elisabeth Fowlie Mock, MD
Dr. Mock received her doctorate from Vanderbilt Medical School and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill. She also attended Colby College and Emory University. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She works primarily as a clinical educator and consultant with per diem hospitalist and buprenorphine clinic shifts and is Maine PMP Clinical and Policy Advisor for Maine’s Office of Behavioral Health.
Ben Townsend
Ben Townsend is a shareholder in the health care law firm of Kozak & Gayer, P.A., in Augusta, Maine. His practice concentrates primarily on strategic and transactional planning for health care providers, as well as professional societies, trade groups, provider networks, and others. He is a member of the Health Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association, and of the American Health Law Association. Since 2007, he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America under the category of “Health Care Law,” and he was named Augusta, Maine’s “Lawyer of the Year” for health care law for both 2016 and 2019. Mr. Townsend is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Maine School of Law. Following his graduation from law school, he clerked for Justice Samuel W. Collins, Jr., of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine, and then practiced at Pierce Atwood before leaving to help start Kozak & Gayer. He is admitted to practice in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and in federal courts.
