Have you ever wondered how newborns exposed to opioids (prescribed and not) in-utero were cared for after birth? In this talk, we will cover what to expect and help you become more comfortable counseling your patients who may care for opioid-exposed infants. We will also cover historical practices and the recent shift to the “Eat, Sleep, Console” method and why this is a much better patient- and family-centered approach.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the history of hospital management of “neonatal abstinence syndrome” (NAS) and provide context for advances that have occurred in this realm in the past decade
- Discuss the Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) protocol as an evidence-based tool in the treatment of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS)
- Review that ESC focuses on the comfort and care of substance exposed infants by maximizing non-pharmacological methods, increasing family involvement in the treatment of their infant and “as-needed” use of morphine

Meredith Jackson, MD
Meredith Jackson, MD is a Newborn and Pediatric Hospitalist at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center and has been in practice since 2015. As the Director of the Newborn Teaching Service and the head of Safe Sleep initiatives at Maine Medical Center, she takes a strong interest in preventative newborn care. Originally from Massachusetts, she attended medical school at the University of Vermont and did pediatrics residency here in Maine. She has two young children and loves being so close to the ocean.
