This review will briefly describe the underlying pathophysiology of opioid use disorder and medication used to treat withdrawal and cravings. The focus of the pharmacotherapy options will be the partial opioid agonist buprenorphine. The pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of buprenorphine will be discussed in depth as well as initiation strategies for diverse clinical scenarios.

Objectives:

1-describe the pathophysiology of opioid use disorder

2-review medications used in the treatment of OUD and withdrawal

3-discuss the pharmacology of buprenorphine

4-identify continuation and initiation strategies of buprenorphine in the inpatient setting
