This talk delves into the intersection of opioid use disorder/substance use disorder (OUD/SUD) and anxiety in adults. Participants will learn how to differentiate and approach various anxiety types; screen, assess, and address co-occurring OUD/SUD, and understand appropriate pharmacologic management critical to patient care.
Objectives
1. Differentiate between substance-induced anxiety, withdrawal-induced anxiety, and clinical organic anxiousness.
2. Employ effective screening methods to identify co-occurring OUD/SUD in patients presenting with anxiety.
3. Understand the implications and potential interactions of medications prescribed for anxiety when taken in conjunction with medications for opioid use disorder.
Presenter: Kevin Simon, MD, MPH
Dr. Simon, Boston’s inaugural Chief Behavioral Health Officer appointed by Mayor Michelle Wu, leads a citywide public behavioral health strategy through the Boston Public Health Commission. Kevin is an academic quadruple threat as a pediatric addiction psychiatrist–scientist, healthcare policy expert, inspiring teacher, and writer at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He is the Director of the ASAP (Adolescent Substance Use & Addiction Program) Justice Clinic within the Division of Addiction Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Simon’s received multiple national research grants for his work on mental health disparities and health equity, including the NIDA-AACAP Physician-Scientist Career Developmental “K12” award. He is renowned for his thoughts on structural violence and the social and political determinants of mental health. His writings are in notable journals like the American Journal of Public Health and the New England Journal of Medicine. National audiences regularly seek his viewpoints and engagement through trusted outlets.
