Description:
In the US, almost one of every two people with Bipolar Disorder suffer with comorbid Alcohol Use Disorder. This complicates the diagnosis, the prognosis and the course of an already difficult to treat illness. We will review epidemiological data, some theories intended to explain this association, and the most evidence-based pharmacological and therapeutic interventions.

- Describe the strength of association between bipolar and alcohol use disorder
- Understand the clinical outcomes when this comorbidity is present.
- Describe the most evidence-based pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions in this dual problem.
Presenters:
Javier Ballester Gonzalez, MD
Javier Ballester in an addiction psychiatrist and medical director of the Substance Abuse and Residential Rehabilitation Center at the Salt Lake City VA. He is certified in General and Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He completed a residency in Psychiatry at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid (Spain) and later on he was awarded a Koplowitz Fellowship to study Child and Adoscent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed a second residency in Psychiatry at Yale University where he also finished the Addiction Psychiatry fellowship. He was the past president of the Utah Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and currently belongs to the Science Initiative Subcommittee of this organization.
