Cara Zimmerman MD is the Medical Director of Primary Care Based Substance Use Disorder Treatment at a large community health center in Rhode Island. She practices both addiction medicine and internal medicine and treats many complex chronic pain patients. This discussion hopes to provide the audience a framework on when to consider starting, continuing, or tapering someone’s prescribed opioids for their chronic pain. There will be a special focus on patients with a history of opioid use disorder or those who have “tried everything” for their pain.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about a comprehensive pain management approach and non-opioid measures for chronic pain management
  2. Gain comfort in an individual risk-benefit approach when it comes to a patient’s chronic opioid prescription
  3. Understand which patients to consider for an opioid taper and how to do so slowly and safely

Cara Zimmerman, MD, MBA

Cara Zimmerman MD MBA is the Medical Director of Primary Care Based Substance Use Disorder Treatment (MAT) for a federal qualified community health center in Rhode Island. She completed her Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine training at Brown University and consults as part of the Opioid Response Network to teach colleagues about substance use disorder.
